This week (a week of annual leave with the kids on their half term break) I’ve managed to finish two books that look at feminism and capitalism.

Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlop

Regenerative Business by Sam Garcia

Both books attempt to reassure me that it’s ok to work towards financial wealth because economic activism is a thing and in the imperfect society we live in, money is power. And we can use that power to work to a fairer society. Both books take a feminist lens to how to survive and thrive in late stage capitalism.

Dunlop does a great job of noting her privilege in writing the book whilst still making us believe that financial safety and then abundance is available to us all. I don’t think there is anything in here that isn’t available freely through her podcast but buying the single book puts all that information into a single place in a logical order. On her advice, I’m currently trying to set up step one of her four steps which is build up a 3 month emergency fund

Garcia uses loads of references to magic and mystical practices which I absolutely love but might be a bit much for some readers. I particularly love her idea of working in cycles. Continuous growth is not natural, nature works in cycles: seasons, the moon, night and day.

I would say The Financial Feminist is for anyone that isn’t a white man that wants to get good with money. It’s also a good introduction to the concept of economic activism and puts forward a fairly convincing argument. Reader beware – I read the book and then immediately dropped £30 at a lovely independent LGBTQIA+ bookshop without hesitation.

Regenerative Business is for anyone that would like a high level of “woo” with their business advice
